Kate, or Mom, Have you observed the closed circuit TV system that was installed in the school this school year? Were there cameras inside or outside the school? Or was there just a camera/intercom system mounted at the entrance door to observe visitors who would be buzzed in. People feel that there may be video saved to disc showing the shooter. I feel this is not the case and nothing is recorded. Bruce

It's just a video monitor. To screen who is coming to the front door. No video cameras were installed.

Yes, that is exactly the information I got from a law enforcement source. Thank you!

Isn't a video monitor and a video camera the same thing? There have been many articles saying SH was proud of their state-of-the-art security system, even having bullet-proof doors..... Bullet-proof doors but no cameras rolling? Really? It doesn't make sense.

Tuffy can you show me where you found info that the school had state of the art security, and bullet proof glass. This was one of our older schools in the district. I would be interested to see that

Not sure what the name is but you hit the button they see who you are and buzz you in. They have a monitor in the office. That's all I know.

Hoax 101 Please, there was no need to add the cheeky comment. All we had was a little gray box with a buzzer on it. If there was a camera that worked I wouldn't know. Every time I rang the buzzer the office staff would look out the window and buzz me in. If it had been someone they did not know I have no idea what they would do. I have never seen anyone enter the school who did not belong.

The box Kate is talking about is a intercom attached next to the front door.It contains a tv camera, speaker and a built in microphone. When you press the call button, the secretary or whoever can see your upper half of your body on a monitor at her desk, talk to you and buzz you in. It is exactly the same as the little school where I live. It does not record to disc.
As far as bullet proof glass. It's probably regular glass from 1956. Nowadays school glass would have to be shatter proof. Even if it was expensive bullet proof glass, after 6 shots from a .223, it would be so weakened as to not prevent passage of any further projectiles.

I would be interested to see that Even though the school was from 1953(?), the school (Principal Hochsprung) bragged about the SOTA security system in an earlier article and her monthly evacuation drills (odd in itself).... I can't provide you with any news clips, but that was part of the 'filler material' on all the news networks--I remember Wolf Blitzer's voice, and probably CBS and ABC reporters. The security system and bullet-proof doors were mentioned several times. That's part of why it was so weird to me that they were considering shutting down the school.. lots of $$ wasted.

So, likely assumption is the middle school, since the new middle school was ready for service the week after the shooting.. ?

No matter what Principal Hochsprung did, she could not have planned for a massive attack like that. The door lock policy was good, because it could have given the staff an extra minute or so to call 911 if they suspected a suspicious person/incident outside. Lanza could have driven his car through the door. It was a soft target. Unless they had equal firepower inside, they could only wait for police. That's why I am still suspicious he pulled it off himself.
One world of note: The firefighters were there most of the day on Thursday Dec. 13th giving fire safety talks. If Lanza had shown up one day earlier, at least seeing a fire truck might have acted as a deterrent. However Lanza could have easily gone to just another school to do his deed. It's called fate.

Very true..Even an extra minute saves lives. Bruce, is Dec. 13 the day that photo was taken, of an officer addressing a group of kids in the gym? The pic is on the main forum, under the SWAT Team thread, I think. Or wait, kate or mom would know this..
