I see in the Newtown Patch, the cheapest new school proposal in Sandy Hook would be to renovate the old school with a new entrance on Crestview behind the school. This would cost 45 million. On the other side of Gene Rosen's house is vacant land with a higher construction cost. Also other proposals. This is big bucks! Unless the state of feds chip in it's going to burden the taxpayers for the next 30 years. What would you like to see done? Thanks, Bruce Newtown Patch link: newtown.patch.com/articles/officials-announce-top-options-for-future-sandy-hook-school

Personally my opinion is that the the town should give the teachers the options available. We have put our foot down and stated we will stay in Sandy Hook and we will not be redistricted or lose any teachers due to the shift. With that being said I have one child who want to go back and one who does not. I believe the ultimate choice should be the teachers. Because if they are happy they will make everything ok for our kids.

Back in 1980, where I live, our 70 year old school had reached the point where it had to be totally renovated or kids redistricted to another town and school shut down and sold.
Fortunately, the taxpayers decided to renovate. Today, 30 years later the school is a modern structure and thrives.
Do not send the children to another district. You will never be able to go back!

Bruce, I live back in 1980, too ....... and I agree with you: a 60-year-old building is a baby! That sukker is made of brick and mortar and could be renovated for far less than it would cost to buy land, wait for construction, and have that building 'archived' in another 60 years.... Why doesn't the USA think like Europeans and keep stone/brick structures for thousands (yes, thousands) of years? We have this 'eeww, it's yucky' mentality where everything is disposable. Yet, the dorfs think they're 'saving the Earth'--it's laughable. My opinion, the PARENTS should be the ones to decide, not the teachers. Teachers are force-fed Common Core (Communism) syllabi and are required to force-feed that to the students. Many are more than happy to do so, a la Soto/Rousseau.. Parents have to learn how to become parents again and do what is best for their kids. Don't let Big Govt/The Re-Education Machine decide what's best for YOUR child. .... stepping off my soapbox for now..

But the piece you are missing is that the teachers even with there own fears and issues have been walking in the door every day for there kids. They have made this transition easier. They are far more affective in the classroom bringing safety back then I can do at home. And I am a parent and will always be. What's beat for my children come first. There will be parents unable To send there kids to a renovated school or even on on the same grounds. They are being parents to there children and looking out for there best interest. And again I was expressing my opinion on what I think should happen. The opinions in town vary drastically .

True. But unless the millions of $$ are used to construct a new school in a new location, it's the TAXPAYERS who ultimately decide. Parents' opinions, NOT the teachers', should determine which direction S.Hook goes.. jmo..
