Newtown ppl: shdad shared in Newtown: Brawling Town? that both the restaurant and coffee shop closed after Dec. 14. What is going on with that? ((Where will Gene Rosen get his coffeeee?! --just kidding) .... The economy is in the tank, yes, but with Newtown probably having few eateries to choose from and the mobs of reporters/curiosity seekers invading the town, their business should be booming. What were the reasons given for their closing?
Any other businesses that closed? What about the shh hair co. with the freaky handprint logo?

I Ok the restaurant and coffee shop are both located in buildings owne by the same person. From what I understand the rent is very high so there is always a turn over in these two spots. For at least a month the locals that normaly support these shops could not as the traffic to get to the center was just over run with people from all over. So these businesses suffered . As for the hair company with the logo... I never looked at it as creepy.

That's NUTS! You are right, I remember coming into town at the beginning of December - right before this, actually - and I saw it was something new too. CT is just TOO expensive! lol

But people know what the rent is when they lease the building... Why do so many open up and then close right away?

I dont think it's a matter of "so many" opening up and closing right away. Red Brick Tavern had been open for a while already (a few years, I believe) when I moved there, and remained open for a few years after I left. I can't speak for anything after that though. I think it's a tough spot. Small parking lot, it's basically on a side street (if you can really count Glen Rd as a side street)... you're going to have to get something really specific in there that is really gonna draw the community in, in order to keep it open long term.
And remember, the landlords can raise the rent once a year and it's possible that this particular landlord didnt lock them into a multi-year lease at a certain rent (which is typical for most restaurant locations, but not standard across the board)... which could lead to the failing restaurants following Red Brick
