Now that the dust has settled, are the kids okay? As in attending their new school and getting back to a regular routine with no behavioral problems?
(This is hard, asking one question at a time, but someone had to go first.)

The kids are having a rough time getting into the routine. Doing the best they can. Some worse than others of course but there is a lot of amazing support in place for students and faculty. Random noises as simple as a chair moving make them scared so they are learning how to cope as best as little kids can. It's only been 3 months although it seems like an eternity....

This may be a stupid question, but in an article I read it said that they had painted the classrooms of the new school the same colors as the old one and that they'd put them back like they were (posters from the old room in the new one..etc). Did that help the kids or did it scare them? If it were me and I'd had a horrible experience, I don't think I'd want it exactly how it was before. Thanks for being here, Kate!

Honestly, the colors were painted to green from blue but the rooms really didn't look like the old school. Desks were not set up the same. Things were moved over but not set up the same as the old school. I was honestly worried about that too when I heard!! But the kids did like seeing their school supplies and jackets and backpacks finally...

Be sure to ask questions in a new thread. Thanks. It makes it easier for the parents to keep track of the questions that have already been answered.

Sorry, I read the rules after I'd already posted. I do things backwards all the time.

The kids are having a tough time adjusting. You just never know what noise, smell or movement will set them off. It is a challenge to just get them to school. For the first 2 months at least one of my kids threw up 50percent of the week before school.

Only time and lots of love will help them through this. What have you talked about? They know what happened--kind of. What do they say?

We don't really talk about it in our house. Just upsets them. Therapy has been great but bring up many feelings. Being sad, scared, frustrated, confused. It's been incredibly hard. Not sleeping, not eating, not going to crowded places, not going on the bus. Everythjng is scary and this should not be what little kids have to go through every day. Some days are really bad, some days are ok. We haven't had a great day but I hope one will come soon. Mondays are always hard because the kids have been home.

I just wanted to share an incident that just happened this evening. My 3rd grader was at the table doing homework and my kindergartener was at the island doing a craft. One of our dogs ran to the side door and started barking ferociously . Apparently a raccoon was on the deck eating the cats food. Both dogs continued to bark very Loud. As I looked out the door to settle the dogs I found my 3rd grader in the corner of the dinning room cowering in fear. My kindergartner ran to the laundry room and hid between the washer and dryer. So no, we are no where near back to normal.

Some days are ok, not what they were, but when we have bad days they are bad. As parents it is so hard to have the patients to make it through the day. I rely on my friends and my faith for support. There is comfort in knowing that we are all in this together! And please don't ever be afraid to ask anything. We will share anything that we can.
